Greetings everyone, just to let you know that I’m back in action after taking few months in the back sit. I also would like to let you know that EQ Music has just re-release my “Gambus goes jazz CD”which are remastered again and it is sounding great, I also include five more live tracks which was recorded live at the Penang Island Jazz Festival. Those tunes are mainly covers, tunes like Ain’t no sunshine,Kaulah segalanya,Caravan, plus two of my originals which are Mr Gambus and a duet with Roger Wang called No strings attached which is the title track of our CD.
This coming April 21st & 22nd will be my concert at the Dewan Philharmonic and the theme of the concert is”Gambus goes Latin” that should be an interesting one. I have great musicians to play in my band and they are, Mac Chiew on keyboard, Andy Peterson on bass,Kamarul on Latin and Malaysian percussions and myself on gambus and vocals.
Jeffrey of GIM is making a special gambustar especially for my concert. Since I’m at it in order not to confuse you, the instrument that I play is called gambustar it is a hybrid between the gambus and the guitr.Unlike the guitar the gambustar has a shorter neck and it is fretless. I t look very much like oud or in Malaysia they call it gambus and the back is flat just like the guitar. One of the bigger challenges for me to bring out the characteristic of the gambus although for me I have the technique of a guitarist. It is a revolution by in cooperating oud techniques of a guitar ,violin and mandolin ,the gambustar is more accessible and it’s got it’s own chalm.This coming July I will teaching the gambustar while developing techniques, repertoire and method.
I also custom made a solid body double neck gambus and a guitar. By in cooperating these two instruments it allows me to express different color and I must admit it takes getting use to.Becauese of it’s weight I have a special guitar stand where the instruments can be played by not strapping it on. Electric gambustar has a different touch and I am happy that I’m able to play the guitar at the same time.
